A day out in Bangalore city
Bangalore, a vibrant, cosmopolitan, and beautiful city, is a great destination whether you're a tourist or traveling for work. Known as the Garden City, Silicon Valley, Pub Capital, and the Start-up Capital of India, its ethnography encompasses people from all corners of the country, making it the most diversified city in India. As someone born and raised here, I've compiled a list of top 'Things to do in Bangalore' if you have just a day to spare. These include some of my favorite experiences, places to visit, eat, and budget hotels where you can stay comfortably.
Lalbagh Botanical Gardens:
Kickstart your day by visiting this lush green garden space. Best enjoyed in the early morning, this popular tourist spot is also frequented by locals. As you stroll around, you'll witness people of all ages engaged in various exercises. Explore the garden's attractions, such as the 3000-million-year-old rock formation, the glass house, India's first lawn clock, and a 300-year-old tree. Lalbagh, abundant in flora, was established in 1760 by Tippu Sultan, who imported plants from around the world. Don't miss the annual flower show held inside the glass house, attracting thousands of visitors.
Tip: Lalbagh gardens have four gates, with the main gate conveniently close to MTR restaurant, which you can visit after your garden exploration. Remember, plastic bottles are not allowed inside, so carry steel, glass, or Tupperware bottles. Additionally, you can opt for a buggie cart tour inside the gardens for a fee.
Bull Temple:
Visit this 500-year-old temple to marvel at the monolithic bull statue carved out of granite stone. Located near MTR restaurant, this temple is open throughout the day, unlike others that close during noon. Immerse yourself in the temple's ambiance, observe devotees, and seek blessings from the friendly priests.
Tip: Leave your footwear outside the main temple area, guarded by caretakers for a small fee. Consider leaving a donation in the box to contribute to the temple's maintenance. Dress modestly, and remember to respect temple customs.
Chitrakala Parishath:
Explore this space, which houses an art school, museum, gallery, and hosts cultural performances. The gallery showcases paintings by students and renowned artists, offering insights into Indian art and architecture. Occasionally, local flea markets feature unique crafts from different states. Don't miss the annual 'Chitra Sante,' India's largest street art festival, held nearby.
Tip: The gallery is closed on Sundays, but you can still explore the grounds where local events may take place.
Bangalore Palace:
Built in the 1800s by the Mysore kings, this palace boasts Tudor architecture and exudes royal charm. Explore its interiors, featuring a Royal Ballroom, Durbar hall, open courtyard, and exquisite paintings. Admire the fusion of Indian and European influences in the palace's decor.
Tip: Admission to the palace costs Rs. 240 for Indians and Rs. 480 for foreigners, with additional charges for mobile and camera use. The ticket includes an audio guide tour.
Cubbon Park:
Escape the city's hustle and bustle at this green oasis established in 1870. Explore colonial structures like the Museum building and State library amidst lush greenery. Whether you're running, exercising, or simply relaxing, Cubbon Park offers a serene retreat.
Tip: Don't miss the children's play area and consider visiting the government museum and state library.
Vidhana Soudha:
Capture a photo at this iconic Parliament house, symbolizing Bangalore's pride. Admire its Dravidian architecture and the adjacent Vikasa Soudha. A statue of Mahatma Gandhi adds to the grandeur of the surroundings.
Tip: For a better view, position yourself across the road from the Parliament house. Note that entry inside is restricted for security reasons.
Commercial Street:
Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Bangalore's bustling shopping district. From branded items to local specialties, Commercial Street offers a wide array of products. Explore side streets for unique finds, and don't forget to bargain at local stores.
